Cover 3 Weak Buzz Defense

Cover 3 Weak Buzz mirrors Cover 3 Buzz: the weak-side safety comes down into an underneath zone and the strong safety rotates to the deep middle. The result is a three-deep shell with a safety, not a linebacker, playing the weak Hook/Curl zone.

How Cover 3 Weak Buzz Works

The corners take the deep outside thirds. In Crucible's diagram the free safety buzzes down and the strong safety rotates over the top to the deep middle, while the linebackers widen to the remaining underneath zones.

Rotating to the weak side lets the defense keep the strong safety aligned honestly to the strength of the formation and still roll to single-high late.

How to Recognize It

  • Like Cover 3 Buzz, it starts from a two-high look, like Cover 4.
  • Corners off the ball with outside leverage, ready to bail to the deep thirds.
  • At the snap the safety away from the strength drives down and the strong safety rotates to the deep middle.
  • The rotation is the tell. It is still four underneath, with a linebacker in the flat on both sides. The safety who comes down plays the weak Hook/Curl.

How a QB Reads It

Treat it as Cover 3. A linebacker plays the flat on both sides, so work the side your concept attacks, and check the buzz safety before any inside throw to the weak side.
