# Rail Route

A rail takes the back out of the backfield toward the flat and then up the sideline. It is one of the best ways to get a mismatch: a back running down the field against a linebacker.

## How the Rail Is Run

The back releases wide as if running to the flat, then turns upfield along the sideline. Inside receivers often run routes that pull the outside defenders in, leaving the sideline open.

## What It Beats

- Man coverage with a linebacker on the back.
- Zone coverage when the flat defender jumps the short route and nobody carries the back vertically.
