# Shotgun Formation

In the shotgun, the QB lines up 5 to 7 yards behind the center and takes a long snap. It gives you time and a clear view of the defense before and after the snap, which is why most spread offenses use it as their base.

## How the Shotgun Lines Up

The QB stands directly behind the center. Most sets put one back beside the QB, roughly even or slightly deeper. Some put a back on each side, and empty sets have none.

## Why Teams Use It

- Vision. You never turn away from the defense to drop, so you can watch the safeties and see the rotation at the snap.
- Time. You start 5 to 7 yards off the ball, so quick throws come out fast and the rush has farther to go.
- Spread run game. Zone read and RPOs work naturally from the gun, with the QB reading a defender while the back runs alongside.

## Common Shotgun Sets

- Double (2x2), two receivers to each side with the back beside the QB.
- Trips (3x1), three receivers to one side.
- Bunch, three receivers clustered tight to one side.
- Empty, five receivers out and nobody in the backfield.

## Common Questions

### How far back is the quarterback in the shotgun?

Usually 5 to 7 yards behind the center.

### Why do teams run the shotgun?

It lets the QB see the defense without turning away, buys time against the rush and fits spread passing and read-option run games.
