How to beat it

# How to Beat Cover 3

Beat Cover 3 by giving one defender two jobs: a seam the Curl/Flat defender has to carry, Stick or Curl on the Curl/Flat defender, Sail to overload one side, and quick throws in front of corners bailing to their deep thirds. See which job the defender takes and throw to the other.

## Where Cover 3 Is Weak

- The Curl/Flat defender, who has a curl or hook at 10 to 12 yards and the flat at 2 to 5 yards and cannot cover both.
- The seams: the Curl/Flat defenders have to carry them up to the post safety, so a seam opens when one of them widens to the flat.
- In front of the corners, who bail at the snap: hitches, comebacks and quick Omaha routes to the sideline come open on rhythm.
- Between the Hook/Curl defenders and the safety: an in route at about 15 yards, with a vertical holding the safety.
- One side of the field, where Sail puts three receivers on the corner and the Curl/Flat defender.

## Five Cover 3 Beaters and the Read on Each

- Stick
A stick at 5 yards, a flat route and a go route clearing the corner. If the Curl/Flat defender widens with the flat, throw the stick; if it sits inside, throw the flat. Three steps, so decide fast.

- Curl
A curl at 12 yards over a flat route attacks the underneath defenders at two depths. The Curl/Flat defender cannot take both, and the Hook/Curl defender has to help on the curl, so throw whichever one they leave, on time. In Crucible's Curl plays the read is the two inside linebackers: one who widens toward a curl takes that side away, so work the other side.

- Sail
A deep route takes the corner, a sail breaks toward the sideline at 12 yards and a short route works the flat: three receivers against the post safety and the strong-side Curl/Flat defender. Read high to low: post safety not over the deep route, throw it. Post safety on it, read the Curl/Flat defender: sinking under the sail, throw the short route; staying low, throw the sail.

- Hitch (Hitch-Seam)
The outside receiver stops at about 6 yards in front of a bailing corner while the slot runs a seam at the safety. Check the post safety for a lean to the seam, then read the defender over the slot: staying tight, throw the hitch; widening to the hitch, the seam is open behind.

- Dig
An in route at about 15 yards behind the Hook/Curl defenders, with a back underneath and ideally a vertical on that side to hold the post safety. If the Hook/Curl defender sinks under the in route, throw to the back; if it comes up, throw the in route.

## Situations

- Out of trips. The vertical by No. 3 becomes a problem for the post safety. See Cover 3 vs trips.
- Against a buzz rotation. A safety rolling down from two-high into the Hook/Curl zone is still Cover 3, with the buzz safety taking away the intermediate window on that side. Read it as Cover 3 once the rotation shows.
- Against match Cover 3. The Curl/Flat defender may carry a seam once routes declare, so use option and stick routes that break away from leverage.
- Short yardage. Stick and Slant: quick, high-percentage throws at the defender with two jobs.
- In 7v7. The pass clock makes Stick, Curl and Hitch the most reliable.

## Mistakes to Avoid

- Throwing a go route outside. The corner is bailing to a deep third, so it is an easy pick or breakup.
- Staring at the seam. The post safety reads your eyes. Look the safety to one seam, then throw the other.
- Throwing the curl late. The Hook/Curl and Curl/Flat defenders both squeeze it. On time it is open; a beat late it is a pick.
- Forgetting the rotation. A two-high shell that spins to one-high at the snap is single-high: Cover 3 if the corners bail with their eyes on you, Cover 1 Robber if defenders run with receivers. Trust the post-snap picture.

## Common Questions

### What is the best play against Cover 3?

Stick and Curl, because both put two receivers on the Curl/Flat defender, who cannot cover both. For a shot, a seam makes that same defender carry it, and it opens when the defender widens to the flat.

### What routes beat Cover 3?

Seams, curls at 10 to 12 yards, hitches and comebacks in front of bailing corners, flats paired with a curl or stick, sails over a flat route, and in routes behind the linebackers.

### Why is Cover 3 weak against seams?

Only three defenders play deep. The corners have to stay deep outside, so the seams fall to the post safety and the Curl/Flat defenders, who also have to guard the flats. When a Curl/Flat defender widens, that seam opens.
